Polegate's MP, Norman Baker, has confirmed that the 54 Stagecoach bus service has been saved from the axe.
Concerns were brought to the MP by a number of local constituents who had been informed that the future of the 54 bus service was under threat. Its cancellation would have left those who use the stops at Dittons Wood Corner and Stone Cross Dittons Road, including many frail elderly residents, with little option but to walk to the top of the High Street, resulting in a one mile round trip in some instances, which could be a real challenge for some if they wished to visit Hailsham by public transport.
However, in a phone call to the Commercial Director of Stagecoach, Jeremy Cooper, it has been confirmed that this service will be saved. This is news that will be welcomed by many constituents who live in the north Polegate area.
Commenting, Norman said: "The 54 is a vital service for those who live along Dittons Road and provides a valuable link to Hailsham's shopping centre and indeed to the district council offices. Requiring local residents from Dittons Road and the surrounding roads to walk to the top of the High Street, as could have happened, would have simply not been good enough and, after investigating this, I am pleased to confirm that the service will continue and that residents are therefore assured of a continued link to Hailsham."
