The current speed limit of 40mph on Dittons Road (B2247), Polegate, is to be reduced to 30mph in a move that has been welcomed by Polegate's MP, Norman Baker.
Following representations made to the Director of Transport and Environment at East Sussex County Council, Rupert Clubb, the council has confirmed in a letter to the local MP that a speed reduction on the full length of Dittons Road, from the centre of Polegate to just west of the roundabout on the A22 Golden Jubilee Way, will take place, with the necessary work commencing in the next few months. In addition, further traffic calming measures will be undertaken by the developer of the site north of Dittons Road.
Despite the bypass helping to reduce lorry traffic, car movements along the road have now returned to a level similar to those experienced before. For many local residents who have contacted the Polegate MP, concerns about the road being a "rat-run" and unsafe have not been alleviated due to a failure to reduce the speed on the road.
Commenting Norman said: "This is a good result for residents of Dittons Road and the surrounding area. Cars are often seen driving very quickly along the road and the unfortunate fact is that little has been done to address this up until now. In conjunction with the reduced speed limit, further traffic calming measures along the road will improve safety for locals."
