7th Oct: Fair compensation for online train customers - success for local MP

Southern customers who have received compensation due to delays will now be able to use it to purchase online discounted fares, following the intervention of local MP, Norman Baker.

Previously, the Delay Repay vouchers given to customers for experiencing a severe delay on a Southern service could only be redeemed at ticket offices. This meant that when a customer had purchased a discounted ticket for a train that was significantly delayed, they were unable to purchase a new ticket for the discounted price when using the vouchers. They had to pay higher rate fares instead.

Norman Baker raised this problem with Chris Burchell, the Managing Director of Southern, and, in response to Norman, he has confirmed that they will now provide an e-voucher option which will allow customers who have received compensation to use it when purchasing discounted tickets online.

Commenting, Norman said: "Buying discounted tickets online is becoming a more and more popular way to purchase rail tickets and it was simply wrong not to allow those who had been given compensation for receiving a poor service not to be able to use that to access reduced priced tickets. I am therefore very pleased that Southern has responded to this problem positively and has come up with a solution which benefits its customers, and my constituents."
