Village Green status recommendation for West Beach is good news, but the campaign must continue for it to be approved by the county council. That is the view of Newhaven's MP, Norman Baker.
Norman Baker has today welcomed the news that the Public Inquiry Inspector has recommended to East Sussex County Council that West Beach is awarded Village Green status. This follows a well orchestrated campaign by local residents, councillors and the Lib Dem town council who have continued to fight for the Village Green status.
The Inspector's recommendation has been passed on to the county council and the final decision rests with them as to whether West Beach will be granted the status and protection that it deserves, and bring public access back to the beach.
Commenting, Norman said: "I recognise that the Port Authority will naturally be concerned by the recommendation, and the implication for the working port, but I will work with them where I can to ensure a workable outcome if the Inspector's recommendations are approved. For today, however, this is a victory for people power and the effort of many. Ultimately, this is a decision for the county council and it is now up to them to decide whether to support the will of the local residents, or to simply ignore it."
