20th Oct: £53million cheque-in for Gatwick Station welcomed by local MP

Gatwick Airport Station's £53million facelift will improve reliability of train links for constituents who commute between the Lewes constituency and London. That is the view of the local MP, Norman Baker.

The station refurbishment will include improvements to the station concourse and improvements to the lifts and escalators. However, more crucially, the work will include a new platform to address the existing rail network bottleneck in the Gatwick area, and the upgrade of the track and signalling to improve performance and reliability for trains passing through the station.

Work to finalise the scheme will start immediately and commuters from the Lewes constituency will see progress at the station from Summer 2011, with the reliability improvements to begin in Autumn 2012 and to be finished towards the end of 2013.

Commenting Norman said: "Rail travel has increased over recent years and this should be welcomed, not least due to the significant environmental benefits that it has. However, a result of the increase is that the network is often running close to capacity and the Gatwick bottleneck is under particular pressure. The expansion of the station's platform capacity and improvements to the rail infrastructure should ease that pressure, resulting in what I believe will be a welcomed further improvement to services for local residents."
