Southern Water has agreed to £1.5million of investment to tackle the recent pollution incident caused by overflow from the holding tanks at the rear of Lynholm Road, Polegate, and prevent future incidents, in a move welcomed by Polegate's MP, Norman Baker.
On numerous occasions over the last few years, holding tanks at the rear of Lynholm Road, Polegate, have overflowed as a result of a flaw in the pipe which runs under the Cuckoo Trail. Most recently, another overflow took place on the 2nd of October.
The sewage overflow subsequently seeped into the Shinewater Lake resulting in it being polluted, leading to the Environment Agency to work to oxygenate the lake, divert watercourses and add dams to protect, where possible, the lake's wildlife from the sewage pollution.
Norman Baker wrote to the Chairman of Southern Water last week to urge urgent and permanent action to address the problem. In an email the MP received on the 19th of October from Southern Water, they have confirmed that a £500,000 pound scheme to replace half a kilometre of the damaged sewer under the Cuckoo Trail will begin in November, with a further £1 million of improvement work to also be carried out when more detailed plans have been drawn up.
Commenting Norman said: "It is a real shame, environmentally, and for the local residents that this problem was not tackled sooner, after all this is not the first time this has happened. However, it does seem clear that Southern Water is now taking this issue seriously and will be addressing the core problem of the sewage pipe, not just with a short term solution, but by undertaking significant works to prevent sewage leaks in the future. I would urge them to not delay on completing the £1.5million works."
