8th Nov: Harbour Heights roads need to be brought up to standard

Action to provide serviceable roads for residents of Harbour Heights is long overdue. That is the view of Newhaven's MP, Norman Baker.

The Lib Dem MP has written to the Managing Director of Persimmon Homes South East Coast Ltd, Andrew Golawski, to call on the company to take steps to undertake the necessary works to allow the completion of a Section 37 agreement and ensure that East Sussex County Council is in a position to adopt the roads. In his letter, he has urged the company to make the upfront investment to benefit the residents of Harbour Heights.

The county council, in a phone call with Norman's office, has made it quite clear that they believe the responsibility lies with Persimmon to move on this, as the council is happy to adopt the roads if Persimmon undertakes the necessary works to ensure that the financial burden is not put on the local taxpayer.

Commenting Norman said: "This problem has been rumbling on for far too long and it needs to be addressed. It is my view that the ball is in Persimmon's court and they need to make a decision, either to undertake a commitment to maintain the roads for the foreseeable future, including the introduction and maintenance of grit bins, or undertake the necessary works in the short term and pass them over to the council. I would encourage them to do the latter and to do it swiftly as the residents' goodwill, after so many years is, understandably, starting to wane. The status quo is not good enough."

Newhaven District Councillor, Carla Butler, added: "Local residents can feel rightly aggrieved by the lack of movement on this, and I would encourage Persimmon to be willing to respond to their concerns and move forward with the council's offer of adopting the roads."
