7th Nov: Over £2.5million for more school places

A fund of over £2.5million is being provided to East Sussex County Council to help to provide more school places for local children, and has been welcomed by the local MP, Norman Baker.

Figures release from the Department for Education show that East Sussex County Council is being provided with £2,541,730 from the £500million capital grants for schools fund. The money is going to schools that are struggling the most with shortages in pupil places and comes on top of the £800million announced in December last year. The fund is also non-ring fenced, meaning that local authorities are able to decide on a local level how the money should be best spent.

Locally, the MP has been approached by a number of parents who have raised concerns about the lack of available spaces for their children and this fund should go some way to alleviate this problem in the future.

Norman says: "Recent figures show that pressure to provide school places will only increase over the next ten years, so it is vital that we ensure that steps are taken to provide enough school places for our children to satisfy that need. That of course will need continuous work, and the Lib Dems in government are committed to doing just that, but this funding announcement, in conjunction with the pupil premium, is a great step in the right direction. It allows East Sussex County Council to use the money in a way that it sees fit, and in a way that best satisfies local needs, which I certainly welcome, not least because of the concerns that many local parents have raised with me about the availability of school places."
